Musical Theatre

MUSICAL THEATRE – SONG, DANCE AND DRAMA for 7-13yr olds. This class will help students develop new skills and build on existing ones. It will encourage emotional expression and social connection. We’ll be looking to help students grow in confidence, get a little exercise, and most of all… have some fun! This class is broken into four components… singing, dancing, acting and performing;

SINGING: we teach basic vocal techniques and focus on building confidence (singing in front of an audience can feel quite vulnerable, even for the most seasoned of performers).

DANCING: students will learn basic musical theatre movement plus a bit of tap dancing on the side (tap shoes not required).

ACTING: we’ll explore what tools every actor (no matter how young, old, or experienced) has at their disposal to convey story, character, and feeling.

PERFORMING:  students will learn fundamental theatre terminology (but we’ll make it fun!) and best practices for the stage (such as the importance of projection and what to do when the director calls ‘places’). And then we’ll bring it all together on stage!

This class is taught by Zelia Horrell. Zelia is a dynamic drama and singing coach (with years of on-stage experience). Each term we create a magical musical theatre piece that is performed for friends and family.

  • DISCOUNT – 10% family discount.
  • Musical Theatre classes require term commitment. Students in these classes will need to be enrolled in the DEVOS studio portal. Once registration is received an invoice for the term will be sent. Invoices are to be paid prior to the student’s first lesson.

Ages:

  • Our classes are mixed ages as we feel a performerr’s ability is not set by their age. Children are more apt to learn from their peers than from adults. The class work is set at the oldest student’s level which maximises the  younger student’s skills and potential. Older students have the opportunity to be helpful and in turn inspire the younger ones. Mixed ages also encourages student’s to build strong bonds with others not of their age.

What to wear:

  • Please wear comfortable sneakers and bring a pair of hard soled shoes for the tap dancing section. The theatre space flooring is not able to accomodate tap shoes. But as long as we can hear your beats, there is no need for tap shoes.
  • Anything goes as long as you can dance in it! Don’t forget layers as the weather gets colder.
  • Long hair tied back and bring a drink bottle!

Parents viewing:

  • Student’s focus better without parents in the studio. You can always peek a look into the studio, through the big windows at Te Atamira and we invite you to an open viewing class in week 9.

Trial Classes – Week one and two only:

  • Term 1 offers trial classes during the first 2 weeks only, Feb 13th and Feb 20th.
  • Trial classes are $5, this is then deducted from term fees should the student enrol for the remainder of the term.

DEVOS TEACHER – ZELIA HORRELL

Zelia has had a love and passion for theatre (musical theatre in particular) since she was a primary school student herself. It all started when she was cast as Zoe in ‘Zoe and the Prince’ (a modern day Cinderella) at the age of 10. Since then she’s thrown herself into every theatrical experience she can get her hands on. She has performed in theatres across NZ and in the United States. Zelia has studied acting and singing under a number of brilliant tutors, and dabbled in the odd dance class or two as well.
She first started working with children in the theatre by choreographing dances for her local primary school’s productions during her University holidays. In recent years she has taught drama and musical theatre classes to ages 4 through 16. Zelia loves not only working with the students to enhance and grow what they are confident in on stage, but also offering them insights and preparing them for theatre ‘in the real world’ by supplementing the onstage fun with a little bit of theoretical knowledge as well (and often the students won’t even know that part’s happening!).
For Zelia… connection, fun, enhancing existing skills, finding new ones, and building confidence is what theatre is all about!

Take it from someone who has been involved in amateur theatre since the age of 5 - it's fun! New shows each term, new people to talk to, new songs to learn, and dances to perfect. It keeps you interested, on your toes and is uplifting every week to see how much you've achieved. Then you do the performance and it's exhilarating being on stage and showing the audience what you've learned. The applause at the end of a show is always well deserved and each child knows that they have helped to bring about such a successful production! As for life skills, learning to work with a different group of people each term is going to help develop a child's sense of identity, so they can be themselves all the time. Performing helps to give a sense of confidence to even the shyest of children; having confidence as an adult and a teen will help to ensure confidence in their abilities for the rest of their life. And who knows, skills they pick up during their time at a theatre school might pay off big time when they get older. So, now you know. Theatre is a wonderful world of learning and expression, and I reckon every child has the right to try it at least once. Go ahead and make 2022 that year of possibility for your child!* Musical Theatre for 7-9yr olds - Mondays 3:30pm* Musical Theatre for 10-13yr olds - Mondays 4:30pmdevos.co.nz/musical-theatre-queenstown/ ...
